Community meetings this August: What you need to know about Kingsway Solar Farm

KSCA invites residents to learn more and speak up before it's too late

Kingsway Solar Farm public meetings

This August, we are holding a series of public meetings to inform local residents about the proposed Kingsway Solar Farm, a development the size of Heathrow Airport that could change the character of our local countryside forever.

The proposed site covers 3,700 acres of productive farmland between Balsham, West Wratting, Weston Colville, and the surrounding villages. If approved, the development would bring large industrial-scale infrastructure into our quiet, rural landscape.

We’re inviting all local residents, whether you’re just hearing about the project or already concerned, to join us at one of our events to find out more.

Upcoming talks

  • Wednesday 6 August – The Reading Room, Weston Colville, 7:30pm
  • Monday 11 August – Memorial Hall, Brinkley, 7:30pm
  • Thursday 14 August – Sports Pavilion, Balsham, 7:30pm
  • Monday 18 August – Village Hall, West Wickham, 7:30pm

At each meeting, KSCA will explain what the Kingsway Solar Farm proposal involves, how the planning process works, and how local people can take part in the statutory consultation, expected to begin in September 2025.

Why the consultation matters

Kingsway Solar Farm is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP). That means the final decision won’t be made by local councils, but by the Secretary of State.

Before the developer can submit its application, it must hold a six-week public consultation. This is the only formal opportunity for the public to raise concerns and provide feedback. This is expected to begin in late summer.

As part of this process, the developer will:

  • Publish a Statement of Community Consultation explaining how people can get involved
  • Release a Preliminary Environmental Information Report (PEIR) with details on likely environmental and landscape impacts
  • Share revised design proposals for public comment

All feedback submitted during this time must be considered and included in a report to the Planning Inspectorate.

What’s at stake for our villages

The Kingsway Solar Farm would mean rows of solar panels up to 3.8 metres high, close to homes and public footpaths. Key local concerns include:

  • The loss of productive agricultural land, much of it in current food production
  • Damage to countryside views, local wildlife habitats and historic landscapes
  • The potential use of compulsory purchase orders to obtain land from private owners
  • The industrialisation of a rural area, setting a worrying precedent for future developments

This will be the one formal opportunity for the public to comment before the application goes to the government,” said Tony Day, Co-Chair of KSCA. “We want residents to feel confident about responding. These meetings are about helping people understand the issues and get their voices heard.”

How you can help

Come to a meeting. Bring a neighbour. Ask questions. Whether you’re already opposed to the development or just want to understand more, now is the time to get involved.

The more informed and united our community is, the stronger our voice will be during the consultation
